The Muslim Student Association is a KU student
organization that works for the betterment of the Muslim and
Non-Muslim community on campus through education, social activities,
and community service.
MSA at KU was founded more than twenty years
ago and has been the sole Muslim organization in Lawrence
until the foundation of the Islamic Society of Lawrence. The
founding of ISL took the responsibility of running and
maintaining the Lawrence masjid (A.K.A Islamic Center of
Lawrence) away from the hands of MSA. This allowed MSA to
focus more closely on its original goals on campus.
MSA events include:
-
Lectures to inform non-Muslims about issues relating to Islam and the Islamic world.
-
A weekly Halaqah (circle of Islamic knowledge) for brothers and for sisters
(2 seperate halqahs).
-
Weekly representation of Islam and Islamic information at the Kansas Union.
-
Group volunteer work at the Lawrence Open Shelter (homeless shelter)
-
Fast-A-Thon - A day during which non-Muslims pledge to fast
for charity. Fast-A-Thon 04 was the first ever to be held in Lawrence and
it got 600+ non-Muslim KU students to pledge to fast.
