The Ramadan Fastathon 2008
What is Fast-A-Thon?
Pledge to fast on
Monday, September 29, 2008 to address
the issue of hunger.
For the Fast-a-thon, money is donated to charity
by local businesses for each non-Muslim that pledges
to fast.
For the fifth time, The Muslim
Student Association of the University of Kansas has joined with
hundreds of other Muslim Student Associations across the country
in a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about hunger. This
is an opportunity for students from all different religions, races,
and cultures to come together for a good cause.
450 people participated in the Fast-a-thon last year.
That resulted in raising $2000 for the Lawrence Open Shelter.
This is a chance that no one should pass up. Let us
all come together as a unit and fast for those in need of our
help. One day to recognize poverty and make a difference.
Let's get hungry for change.
What is Ramadan?
During the Islamic month of Ramadan (starting September 1, 2008),
Muslims fast during daylight hours as an act of submission,
solidarity, and remembrance. One of the main reasons for fasting
is to call attention to those who go hungry every day, not as an
exercise of religious expression, but as a fact of life.
What you can do:
Pledge to abstain from food and drink
during the daylight hours on
September 29, 2008.
What happens then?
Money will be donated to the
Lawrence Community Shelter, and the
Islamic Relief USA orphan drive
by our community
supporters on your behalf to fight hunger and homelessness.
Everyone that pledges is invited to a
free, delicious Middle Eastern dinner and program
where we will break our fast together.
